A guide to the treatment

Fluoride and sealants,
Varnish for the enamel, sealant for the grooves. Two preventive measures, addressed together, each protecting a different weak point.

Two weak points, two answers. Varnish is painted onto the tooth surface, strengthening enamel against the acid that causes decay. Sealant is a thin coating, flowed into the deep grooves of the back teeth, sealing a surface no toothbrush bristle reaches fully. The two are often provided at the same appointment. Each addresses a different vulnerability, the smooth surface and the groove, under the same underlying risk. Which combination applies, and to which teeth, is a question settled by assessment.

Why it is done

Fluoride and sealants

01

Enamel, strengthened

Varnish is painted onto the tooth surface. It helps enamel resist the earliest stages of decay, before a cavity forms or spreads.

02

Grooves, sealed

A fissure sealant fills the deep grooves of the back teeth. A surface ordinary brushing struggles to reach on its own, closed off.

03

One visit, two protections

Varnish and sealant are frequently placed together. The smooth surfaces and the deep grooves, addressed in a single, unhurried sitting.

How it happens

Varnish for the enamel, sealant for the grooves. Two preventive measures, addressed together, each protecting a different weak point.

01

Assess first

The teeth are examined. Grooves measured for depth, the areas most likely to benefit identified before anything is placed.

02

Clean and dry

The tooth surface is cleaned and kept dry. Both varnish and sealant material require this to bond correctly and last.

03

Apply carefully

Varnish is brushed on and sets quickly. Sealant is flowed into the grooves and set firm with a curing light.

Questions before a decision

Varnish and sealant suit a wide range of patients. The right combination depends on individual risk and the shape of the teeth involved, decided at assessment, not assumed in advance.

Does either treatment involve discomfort?

No drilling. No injection, in most cases. Varnish is painted on. Sealant is flowed into place. Both generally well tolerated, by children and adults alike.

At what age are sealants placed?

Once the permanent back teeth have fully erupted. Assessed at a routine visit, not determined by age alone or a fixed birthday.

Are sealants available to adults?

Yes. Not restricted to children. Deep fissures or elevated decay risk, in an adult, may warrant the same protection, assessed on its own terms.

Do these treatments require renewal?

Sealants are reviewed at each check-up, topped up where worn. Varnish is reapplied at an interval set by individual risk, never a fixed schedule.
